The New York Islanders will be looking to reach the top of the summit sooner rather than later. After a bit of a lean patch, the time has come for this legendary team to mount a comeback and they have enough potential on the roster to do that as well.
The Islanders Arrive
The World Hockey Association was to start its operations in the year 1972 and wanted to base its side, the Raiders, in New York City. The officials of the county were reluctant to accept the WHA as a major league but even then they needed an NHL franchise to stop the Raiders from being based in the city.
William Shea and Clarence Campbell (NHL President) then talked to Bill Jennings, who owned the Rangers. An agreement was reached and that set in motion plans for the creation of a new NHL team. That side eventually being the New York Islanders.
A Decade of Dominance
The New York Islanders were officially incepted in 1972 and won two back to back division titles in 1978 and 1979. They then went on to win the conference championship and the Stanley Cup in 1980. The Islanders became the team to beat in the 1980s as they picked up three more Stanley Cups to go with four conference titles and four division championships.
They are yet to taste any success since then. They are now showing signs of coming back to life. Grab your New York Islanders Raleigh tickets and watch them take on the Hurricanes to see where they stand right now.
