When the merger of the AFL and NFL took place in 1970, the New England Patriots joined the NFL, the team having been a long-time member of the AFL. Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the team established themselves as the New England Patriots after relocating in Foxborough in 1971. Included in the East Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL) and based in the greater Boston area, The New England Patriots play their home games in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is a suburb of Boston. Under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick and the celebrated quarterback Tom Brady, the New England Patriots achieved a milestone for themselves and made NFL history by compiling the two longest winning streaks ever, an 18-game streak in 2003—2004 plus a 21-game streak in 2006—2008.
The Patriots have played six AFC championships. Four New England Patriots have made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, among them Nick Buoniconti (1962—68), John Hannah (1973—85), Mike Haynes (1976—82) and Andre Tippett (1982— 93). The New England Patriots established the Patriots Hall of Fame in 1991. Fourteen former members have been enshrined as a result of voting by a committee of members and staff. Some of the Pats featured from various decades include Buoniconti (1973— 1985), Babe Parilli (1974—1987), John Hannah (1990s), and Bruce Armstrong (2000s). In 2008, the Hall of Fame had an opening at Patriot Place. In 2009, owner Robert Kraft inducted former owner Billy Sullivan as a contributor.
