The National Invitation Tournament was incepted way back in 1938. The Metropolitan basketball Writers Association took the responsibility to arrange the competition which was relinquished two years later to the colleges. The Temple Owls wrote their names in history books by becoming the first team to win the NIT after beating the Colorado Buffaloes in the final.
NIT’s field consisted of six teams for the first few years which was expanded to eight in the year 1941. That number was increased to twelve, then sixteen, twenty four, thirty two and finally forty in 2002. Forty teams competed till 2006 but the field was once again reduced by eight to thirty two sides starting 2007 and that has remained the case since.
The National Invitation Tournament began to attract the cream of college basketball right from the beginning. The principle reason was that it was held in New York, which brought along a lot of exposure from the mainstream media. The players also played to their potential because they knew they would be playing in front of scouts. So everyone had to be on top o their game which added a bit of extra class to proceedings.
The NCAA was holding its own championship and there was at times a clash of interests between the NIT and the NCAA. Some cited the NCAA winners as the national champions whereas others went for the team that triumphed at the NIT. There were years when certain sides used to take part in both competitions. That trend was started by Duquesne and Colorado in the year 1940. The City College of New York created history by winning both tournaments in 1950. They remain the only team to do that to this day. The NCAA took control of the National Invitation Tournament starting 2005 as part of a decade long contract they signed with MIBA. The MIBA will cease to exist for the duration of the contract.
The National Invitation Tournament has been among the most watched basketball tournaments in the country, especially at the college level. The biggest teams and the best young players in the sport have stepped up and given fans one memorable game after another over the years to play their part in making NIT so famous.
