About the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
The NASCAR Sprint Series Cup is an annual stock car racing championship that began in 1949. Initially named the Strictly Stock Series, the inaugural year presented 8 races with the first race being held at the Charlotte Speedway. Red Byron was the winner of the Sprint Series Cup title for the year.
Format & Name Change
For the first two decades, the Sprint Series’ races were held on dirt-surfaced tracks.
