The sports program of the Michigan State University comprises twenty five sports teams – 12 for men and 13 for women. For ice hockey games, the team competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Fencing was demoted from the sports program way back in 1997. However, the Fencing Club of the Michigan State University is still an integral part of the Midwest Fencing Conference, which includes 16 varsity programs.
Besides basketball, football and cross country, the Michigan State Spartans participate in other games as well. These include rugby, baseball, rowing, boxing, wrestling, golf, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball. Since 2005, Cathy George has been the head coach of the women’s volleyball team. Under her training, the team finished at the ninth position in the Conference, ranking with a record score of 12-18. Gene Orlando is the head coach of the men’s tennis team.
The Michigan State University’s rugby team was formed in 1964. During the 2010-11 season, the Spartans ended the Division 2 playoffs in a record score of 10-3. Subsequently, with this success, the team was allowed to play in Division 1 AA for the 2011-12 season.
