Erik Spoelstra holds the reins as the current coach in charge of Miami Heat, having spent eight years as Assistant Coach/Head of Scouting. Spoelstra is the first Filipino-American to coach in the NBA, taking over in 2008 from current general manager, the legendary Pat Riley. Riley coached Miami Heat for a total of eleven years in two separate spells, becoming third in the all-time list with his fifth overall NBA Title before concentrating on behind-the-scenes managerial duties. The on-court success of the Miami Heat has, of course, had a lot to do with a well-managed youth system. The Sioux Falls Skyforce is the accomplished D-League affiliate team of the Heat, based in South Dakota, & has been providing a constant stream of blistering talent to shine on the global stage. Miami Heat has 7 Division titles, one Conference Championship & one NBA Title to its name. Starting off abysmally with the second worst season in franchise history, Miami had to wait until coach Kevin Loughery's timely intervention in 1992 to make the playoffs for the first time, & two further years to post their first winning season. With Pat Riley taking charge in 1995, a major shuffle of personnel ensued. Alonzo Mourning flourished as center, & building a nucleus around Dan Majerle & P.J Brown, Riley landed four consecutive Atlantic Division Championships from 1997 onwards. However, Mourning's diagnosis with focal glomerulosclerosis threw a spanner into the works & Riley eventually stepped down in 2003. New boss Stan Van Gundy shocked the NBA with his lightning quick & exciting youthful team consisting of Lamar Odom & a budding Dwayne Wade. With a new injection of pace & vigor, Heat won three consecutive Southeast Division titles (2005-07) & made it to consecutive Conference semis & finals before winning in 2006 to set up a Championship showdown with Dallas Mavericks. The managerial acumen of Riley (who retook charge midseason) & the brilliance of Wade & Shaquille O' Neal shone through for Miami as they clinched the title.
