A bit of hot action in the American football field awaits you this year. Based in the Miami, Florida, the Miami Dolphins are a professional football team that play at the home ground of Sun Life Stadium. Their headquarters are at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility in Davie, Florida. The franchise is part of the National Football League (NFL) and falls under the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). Joseph Robbie founded the team in 1966. They currently rank in Florida as the oldest continuous professional sports franchise in major league. Miami Seahawks of the AAFC are the first Florida sports franchise in 1946.
Miami Dolphins played their first game in Super Bowl in 1971 where the Dallas Cowboys defeated them. They swept the Super Bowl eventually with a win in 1972 triumphing in all 14 regular season games, Super Bowl VII and two playoff games. With this they paralleled the records of Los Angeles Bulldogs set in 1937, Cleveland Browns in 1948 and Calgary Stampeders in 1948. They secured the fourth perfect regular season in NFL history in 1972 while the other three teams failed to succeed in the NFL Championship. The Super Bowl VIII was also won by them making them the first team to appear in three successive Super Bowls. They however lost both games when they appeared in Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XIX.
The Dolphins were trained by head coach Don Shula for most of their career. Under him, the team lost records in just two of his 26 seasons with the club. During the 1970s, six players who played for the team became Hall of Fame members in future. These included quarterback Bob Griese and running back Larry Csonka. Dan Marino who served the team during the 1980s and the 1990s listed himself as the most creative passer in NFL history setting new league records. He led the team to 10 playoff appearances, five division titles and Super Bowl XIX before withdrawing after the 1999 season.
In 1965, Miami Dolphins were incorporated in the American Football League (AFL) with stakes by actor Danny Thomas and lawyer Joseph Robbie. By then, the team did not have a name and a contest was conducted in this regard for the American Football League. A thousand different names were submitted and a seven-member team screened the finalists. Some of the forwarded names were Marauders, Missiles, Sharks, Mariners, Mustangs, Suns and Moons. "Dolphins" was proposed by 622 participants.
Since the team's inception, their logo and uniforms have been the same. Orange and aqua comprise the team's colors while in 1997, navy was also included as a trim color. The logo shows a flying dolphin with a football helmet with letter M printed on it. The dolphin's head was displayed near the center of the sunburst when the team debuted in 1966. The dolphin's body was printed at the center on the sunburst in 1974. Changes kept being made with the most significant revision occurring in 1997 with the sunburst being simplified and a rather grim game-face look was imparted to the dolphin besides a darkened shade.
The uniform of Miami Dolphins embraces white helmets with either aqua or white pants and aqua or white jerseys. A high grade lycra/cotton polymer is used as a fabric for pants to facilitate the action. In 1997, some substantial revisions were affected. The logo was redesigned with the dolphin's size given a proportionate increase. A three-dimensional look was also affected. The logo's sunburst was made free of the hashmarks around its borders. The uniform numbers were given Navy drop shadows. Aqua color was finalized for pants in the touring uniforms. The Dolphins have also been in the limelight. They appeared in the film "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective".
