The Kansas City Royals are relatively new to the MLB, having been formed in 1969. The franchise is based out of Kansas City in Missouri and is placed in the American League where it plays in the Central Division. The home stadium of the Royals is the Kauffman Stadium which was previously called Royal Stadium.
Origin of the Name
In choosing a name for the newly created franchise, the owners went for a proud event that has become the hallmark of Kansas City. The ‘Royals’ is a tribute to the ‘American Royal’ show which takes place every year since 1899. The show relates to livestock, rodeo and horse shows as well as a barbecue competition.
Filling the Void
The need for a new franchise was felt after the previous Kansas City MLB team, the Athletics relocated to Oakland. The Royals are owned by local businessman Ewing Kauffman. He was aided in his bid to bring an MLB franchise to Missouri by Stuart Symington who was the State Senator at the time.
The Royals made an immediate impression in the league with their dynamic style of play. Within a short time, the franchise became a permanent playoff contender. Between 1976 and 1985, the Royals reached the playoffs seven times. During these deep runs, the franchise managed to win its first World Series title as well as its first AL pennant. Some of the most popular players in its lineup from that era included Hall of Famers such as Amos Otis, John Mayberry, Bret Saberhagen. Hal McRae and Frank White.
