They started as members of the American Football League (AFL) being initially called the Dallas Texans. The team was renamed the Kansas City Chiefs when it moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1963. The Chiefs had a reigning career from 1960 to 1969 and achieved three league championships. They also set an all-time AFL record of 92-50-5. By overcoming the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, the franchise became the second AFL team to subdue an NFL team in an AFL-NFL World Championship after the New York Jets. The team commands uniqueness by being the first one to participate in Super Bowl in two different decades. They are also the second franchise to appear in more than one of these championship games next to the Green Bay Packers.

The story of the Kansas City Chiefs starts with Lamar Hunt discussing the prospects of establishing a professional football league in 1959 that could compete against the members of the NFL. It was basically an NFL game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants in 1958 that pushed up his desire to create a football team. Initially, Hunt endeavored to purchase and move the NFL's Chicago Cardinals to Dallas, being his hometown. The attempts however failed and he then approached the authorities of NFL to permission to set up an expansion franchise. NFL did not entertain Hunt's request who was left with no choice but to establish the American Football League (AFL) with the Dallas Texans as his own team to start play in 1960.

The dynamic owner of the Dallas Texans recruited Hank Stram from the University of Miami as the head coach of the team. The Texans started their career with a zeal winning the Cotton Bowl for three seasons in contrast with Dallas Cowboys, the NFL team. Though the Texans managed a score of 24,500 at the Cotton Bowl which served as the league's best score but they achieved less attention since the league was not a known entity with the masses yet. The team achieved only a 14-14 record in the first two seasons. They competed against the Houston Oilers securing an 11-3 record in their third season. The Oilers lost the game to the Texans in double overtime with 17-20 and the event was project by ABC on local TV. The game is still counted as the longest championship game in professional football history lasting 77 minutes and 54 seconds. The team achieved popularity with the fans soon afterwards. They progressed with renewed spirit and were finally relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1963.

Carl Peterson was brought in as the new president of the Kansas City Chiefs in December 1988. A new team building strategy was acquired by in 1988 and 1989 making the Chiefs reach the postseason in six straight years. They overcame the Oilers in January 1994.
