In 2013, the challenge was organized as the International Champions Cup and it saw some of the most formidable teams in the world of soccer compete. All matches except one were held in US stadiums with the remaining match held in Valencia, Spain. Teams that competed in this championship are the Los Angeles Galaxy from the US MLS and Valencia FC and Real Madrid FC from Spain. From Italy’s Seria A league, three teams competed; Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus. From the English Premier League, Everton FC and Chelsea FC took part.
The teams were divided into two groups; a Western group and an Eastern group. Tied games were decided by penalty kicks. Teams who won a match received two points and those who lost through penalty kicks received a point. Teams that lost a match received no point. In case of a tie overall, goals came into the play, as well as a head to head match.
