It was the vision and dedication of a priest from Sicily that the university was erected in 1887 in the newly created city of Spokane in Washington. Over the years, the university varsity teams went through a maturation phase where they picked up many nicknames. However, eventually it was replaced in favor of the Bulldogs which went more in line with the tenacity and determination of the Gonzaga varsities. However, to some fans the nickname ‘Zags’ which is short for Gonzaga seemed fit. No matter which nickname became popular, it was Gonzaga’s play that mattered the most. Over the years they became famous for their gritty style of play and never-say-die attitude which is what attracts hoards of fans to watch them play every season.
