The Bulldogs is the name adopted by all the varsity sports that play for California State University. The football team is among the 18 varsity sports supported by the educational institution. Fresno State Bulldogs played its first season in 1921, during which it was as an independent team. The following year, it joined the California Coast Conference and within a year competed against a number of rivals. In 1923, the Bulldogs left the California Coast Conference to become a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference. As part of the conference, the team played against opponents from Nevada, UC Davis, Pacific and San Jose State. During the initial years, Fresno State Bulldogs won many games. In 1961, it played an undefeated season under the leadership of head coach, Cecil Coleman. The Bulldogs went onto winning the Mercy Bowl against the Bowling Green, 36-6.
Currently the successful collegiate team is a member of the West Division of the Mountain West Conference which it joined in 2013. The Bulldogs have so far won 26 conference championships, 1 division title and 2 Consensus All-American players. As of 2014, the Bulldogs have established an all-time record score of 585-387-27 with a current postseason bowl record of 12-12.
