Detroit Pistons were founded by Fred Zollner as Fort Wayne Pistons in the city of Fort Wayne Michigan in 1941. Zollner was into manufacturing business of pistons for locomotives that was a reason he named the team Pistons. Later on Fred felt that the team can only be made profitable if they are moved to a bigger city so in 1957 he took the initiative of moving the team to Auburn Hills Detroit and renamed it. They were a member of NBL and later own became part of NBA when these two merged in 1949. The Palace of Auburn Hills is their home arena since 1988.
As soon as the Detroit Pistons formed, they immediately embarked on a winning journey and went on to win 4 consecutive ABL Divisional titles in 1943-44-45-46 and also won 2 NBL Championship leagues in 1944-45. In 1955-56 the Pistons were in immaculate form, they won 2 Divisional and 2 Western Conference titles their first ever. With this form they played their first NBA finals in 1955 but lost to Syracuse Nationals which many think was intentionally done by the Pistons as they conspired with gamblers to lose the game. The 60’s and 70’s were quite low performing decades for the Pistons and the team was sold to Bill Davidson.
The Pistons entered the 80’s with a losing streak record of 21 games. In 1981 things started improving after the Pistons drafted 3 shinning players Vinnie Johnson, Bill Laimbeer and Isiah Thomas, this trio played important role in the team’s winnings. In 1983-84 Pistons won 49 and lost 33 to finish 2nd in Eastern Conference and in 1984-85 they lost in the Conference semi-finals to Boston Celtics. In 1986 Piston Coach Chuck Daly decided to change the team playing style and opted for a more aggressive attack and Pistons acquired more key players. All this was fruitful and the Pistons raced to Eastern Conference finals but lost the match in a nail biting finish to their arch rivals Boston Celtics.
In 1987-88 the Pistons stood 1st in the Eastern Conference and took revenge from Boston Celtics by beating them in finals, they also made their first trip to NBA finals but lost against the Los Angeles Lakers. 1988-90 were one of the best seasons for the Pistons as they proved that they are a force to reckon with, they won the Conference finals and made history by winning 2 consecutive NBA championships by beating the Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers respectively. The Pistons winning streak came to an end in 1991 and until 1999 they went through a lot of line-up changes and repeated head coach changes.
In 2000-01 Rick Carlisle was appointed coach and he helped the Pistons to win their first 50-win and got amazing players like Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton this converted them into a winning team. They went on to the 2003 Conference finals but lost to Jersey Nets but won the Conference finals and also the NBA finals by defeating rivals the Lakers. In 2005-06 was their best season and they scored 2nd best 42-game in NBA history but lost in Conference finals to Miami Heat, they went to the Conference finals for the next 2 seasons but lost both the games in 2007-08.
