Deontay Wilder: The other Star from Alabama
Before there was Deontay Wilder, Alabama had produced one of the biggest boxing champions of all time, Joe Louis. Matter of fact, Wilder’s nickname “The Bronze Bomber” is fashioned after Louis’ nickname “The Brown Bomber”.
Deontay Leshun Wilder was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on October 22, 1985. He is married and a father to four children. When he was in high school, he wanted to play professional football, but when one of his daughters was born with a birth defect, he abandoned his dream and instead concentrated on boxing.
Wilder’s Amateur Career
Wilder was 19 years old when he started training under Jay Deas at Skyy Boxing Gym in Northport, Alabama. His peers thought that he had started late, but within a period of two years he proved everyone wrong. By 2007, he defeated all those fighters who were favorites to win the US championships and the National Golden Gloves. Soon he was fighting his way to secure a place in the 2008 Olympics. He qualified for the Olympics by defeating Rafael Lima, Jorge Quinones and Deivis Julio. Once in the Olympics, he competed in the heavyweight category and defeated boxers from Morocco and Algeria. However, Clemente Russo from Italy defeated Wilder and he ended up winning a bronze medal for the US.
Wilder’s Professional Career
In 2008, at the age of 23, Wilder began his professional career. By 2012, he had won 25 back-to-back fights, all knockouts and that too within the first four rounds.
First Professional Title Win
On December 15, 2012, Wilder fought Kelvin Price, who at that point had an unbeaten record. The fight took place at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. However his unbeaten record was tarnished when Wilder’s right hand connected with Price’s jaw that sent him first straight into the ropes and then onto the floor. He couldn’t get back on his feet and the referee called the fight. With this, Deontay Wilder became the WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion. This was just the beginning of Wilder’s professional career and he has gone on to win many more championships.
Wilder has an orthodox stance. He makes optimal use of both hands. Considered an outside fighter, Wilder’s straight right hand has seen many fighters take to the floor. He uses his left hand to jab and establish range and then throws in his right hand for the infamous knockout punch. Unlike some heavyweight boxers, who due to their weight and age, throw sloppy punches, Wilder is quick and athletic and makes optimal use of his physique to tire out his opponents.
