Cornell Big Red represents the Cornell University as they compete in the various NCAA Division I Athletic programs. The university offers different combined 36 athletic programs for men and women. Like most of the collegiate programs, Cornell Big Red also has some bitter rivalries. The most notable and historical rivalry of the Big Red men’s ice hockey team was with Boston University. The match between the two usually attracted big numbers of viewers, and was highly anticipated. But later the rivalry was put on the shelf when Boston University joined Hockey East. Later in 1970, another rivalry was born, and this time it was with Harvard University. Apart from their fierce rivalry with Harvard University, Big Red’s ice hockey is also rivals with Colgate University and Clarkson University. Big Red’s rivalry with Harvard University also gave birth to this Big Red tradition, where some of the Big Red fans through fish on the ice rink as Big Red take on Harvard University on their home ice of Lynah Rink. Other than the men’s ice hockey, Syracuse University and Johns Hopkins University’s men’s lacrosse teams also have rivalry with Cornell.

Cornel Big Red’s football team is one of the oldest and talked about collegiate program all across the nation that is offered by the University. The team played its first season in 1887, and since its inception the team has brought home five national championships along with three conference championships. Presently the team competes in the Ivy League and plays its home games at Schoellkopf Field. Big Red men’s basketball team on the other hand plays its home games at the Newman Arena as they also compete in the Ivy League. So far the team has had a number of successes, but the best season that the team has had so far was in 2010 when they made it to NCAA Tournament finals for the first and only time. Apart from that, the team has also won eight conference championships.

Cornell’s men’s ice hockey team happens to be one of the most successful athletic programs at the University. So far the team has claimed two National Championship titles, along with the distinction of being the only College Ice Hockey team in NCAA college hockey history that was able to score a perfect undefeated season record of 29-0-0, in 1970.
