CONCACAF Gold Cup
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the region’s elite international soccer event that features the best sides from North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. It takes place once every two years to determine the finest soccer nation in the three regions. Get your CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals tickets as soon as possible to enjoy the on-field action.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup was first held in 1991 in the United States. The hosts came out on top after getting the better of Honduras in the final. Prior to that, the CONCACAF Championship used to be the premier international soccer competition of the region. It was revamped and rebranded that year into the Gold Cup.
Since then, only three nations have managed to get their hands on the coveted trophy. Mexico and the United States have been the major forces with 13 titles between them. Canada are the only other nation to have won the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
As already mentioned, two teams have made this competition their own. The United States, who have hosted the vast majority of tournaments so far, and Mexico have dominated the Gold Cup since its inception.
El Tri are the most successful side in the history of the Gold Cup with 7 titles. The first of these came in 1993 when the Mexicans hosted the event. In the final, old rivals and defending champions USA awaited them at a packed Aztec Stadium in Mexico City. The hosts delivered a brilliant performance to trounce the USMNT 4-0 and win their maiden Gold Cup in front of more than 130,000 people.
This proved to be the first of three consecutive Gold Cup wins. The Mexicans have a very impressive record against the United States in Gold Cup finals, with 4 wins from 5 encounters against their rivals.
Over the years, the United States have become almost perpetual hosts of the Gold Cup. To date, all but two editions of the tournament have taken place in the US. With 6 Gold Cup wins, the USMNT are the second most successful side in the competition.
Canada are the only other nation to have tasted Gold Cup success. The Canucks’ solitary triumph came in 2000 at the expense of Colombia. Costa Rica and Jamaica are a couple of other sides who have a chance of lifting the title. In particular, Jamaica will be hoping for a case of third-time lucky after finishing runners-up twice before (2015 and 2017).
Though most people would expect either Mexico or the USA to be crowned champions again, soccer is a funny game. The Gold Cup has given fans plenty of surprises over the years and the likelihood of that happening again remains pretty strong.
