The upcoming game is a part of the CONCACAF Champions League, an annual football competition. The yearly game initiated back in 1962 and has been organized by CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football). This contest is known to present matches between top North American clubs. Currently it consists of twenty four football teams from the North American, Caribbean and the Central American zone. From Northern America, Canada brings in one club and Mexico and United States each bring in four clubs. From Central America, two clubs qualify from football federations of Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Gautama and Panama and one club from Belize and Nicaragua. From the Caribbean zone three teams qualify from the CFU Club Championship.
The current format for the CONCACAF Champions League game includes a total of eight groups that consists of three teams each. Matches are held and each winner from the eight groups qualifies for the quarterfinals. From the four teams, two advance towards the finals from which the CONCACAF Champions winner is chosen. Last year’s winner for the CONCACAF Champions League was C.F. Monterrey who won against Santos Laguna with a score of 4-2. With this win, Monterrey was able to bag its third CONCACAF win.
Countries that have been able to present football teams to bag the greatest number of wins include Mexico on top with a whopping amount of twenty nine wins and fourteen runner-ups endings. Costa Rica lands in second place with six wins and five runner-ups, and El Salvador follows closely with three wins. With space for over twenty five thousand people, the arena is a two hundred million dollar, state of the art football venue. Inaugurated in 2011, the venue is currently operated by Global Spectrum. In 2012, Sporting Park was named the "Venue of the Year" by TheStadiumBusiness Awards. It was also amongst the finalists of the "Sports Facility of the Year Award" and "New Venue Award".
