Major League Baseball (MLB) has revived a new era in the sports scene in the USA. The baseball season that starts from April of every year, earns the highest in ticket sales amongst team sports in America. A game of baseball not just draws huge crowds but portrays the cultural trends of the country. Based in Denver, Colorado, the Colorado Rockies are a MLB team which was formed in 1991 and started playing in 1993. It is the Rocky Mountains passing through Colorado which have inspired the name of the team. The club plays in the West Division of the National League, and holds their home games in downtown Denver at Coors Field.
The National League pennant was won by the Rockies in 2007 season. This was their first victory in franchise history after losing multiple seasons. Although plans were underway to bring Major League Baseball to Colorado, but the initial attempts could not materialize. Finally in the late 1980s, Denver's dream of having its own baseball team seemed possible. A new baseball stadium was planned by the Colorado Baseball Commission who managed to get Denver voters to approve a 0.1 percent sales tax to finance the venue. After some procedural delays, Denver along with Miami, Florida was approved as the sites in July 1991 for two baseball teams.
The Colorado Rockies became the members of the National League in 1993. David Nied from the Atlanta Braves was the first induction in the team as the pitcher who stayed with the team for four seasons. The team played their first game opposite the New York Mets in April 1993 at Shea Stadium but lost 3-0. Four days later they won their first game in franchise history by subduing the Montreal Expos with 11-4 score. This was also their first game at Mile High Stadium which remained their home ground. 80,000 spectators attended the game which is on record as the largest crowd to attend a MLB regular-season game. The 2nd baseman's leadoff home run that occurred in the bottom of the first game contributes to one of the most memorable plays in the game.
The first year for the Colorado Rockies proved to be hard as in the case with many other teams. The team lost a game 2-17 during one stretch in May. Their first winning streak arrived only in September when they secured 17-9. The team still set a record for a NL franchise by finishing the season with 67 successes. They achieved further milestones with 4,483,350 spectators attending their games for the season which still serves as a MLB record. Due to an embezzlement scandal in 1992, the franchise was sold by the then ownership with Jerry McMorris (a Trucking-company executive) becoming the head of the ownership group. The franchise's ownership currently belongs to brothers Charlie Monfort (a former executive) and Dick Monfort.
The Colorado Rockies have sustained the pressures over the decades. The team set a franchise record in June 2009 with 21 in a 28 game stretch. They scored a total of 151 runs leading all of major league baseball during June. Two players in the team, starting pitcher Jason Marquis and right fielder Brad Hawpe were inducted in the All-Star game. The Rockies played against the San Francisco Giants in August in a game that ended up in 14 winnings. The Giants won the game with 4-1. The Rockies took on the Milwaukee Brewers in October 2009 defeating them with a score of 9-2. With this win, they secured the 91st win of the season, shattering an earlier franchise record. They then played as the NL Wild Card in the playoffs opposite the Philadelphia Phillies. This was the second time in three years that they played as the NL Wild Card.
Baseball season continues in USA with its usual associated kicks. Be a party to Colorado Rockies Tickets!
