Coke Zero 400 Schedule 2017-18
The International Speedway Corporation and the Coca Cola Company signed a 10 year contract in 2008 which allowed Coke Zero to become the title sponsor of the historic race and Coca Cola to become the official soft drink of the widely attended event. The race will be referred to as the Coke Zero 400 till 2018. It had previously been called the Pepsi 400 and the Firecracker 400.
The Daytona International Speedway has been one of the most famous race tracks in US racing history. In 1959, after two fatal accidents took place on the speedway, officials concluded that extremely fast speed races would not be allowed on the tracks. However, the owner of the race track, William France Sr., announced his plans to host a 250 mile, 100 lap stock car race there.
The new race was called the Firecracker 250, since it would be staged on the 4th of July weekend. The owner announced that the winner would win the Marshall Teague Memorial Trophy, in honor of the recently diseased racer, who had died on the track.
The first race was attended by 12,900 fans and was a huge success. During the laps, there were no caution flags and everything ran smoothly, including the preliminary entertainment activities like the Dixie Beach beauty pageant. Daytona native, Fireball Roberts was the inaugural winner.
Over the next couple of years, the best drivers in the US started to participate in the race and the number of spectators grew with each passing year. Expansion was required and the organizers did just that by increasing the number of laps to 160 and the distance to 400 miles. Thereafter, the race became known as the Firecracker 400.
The Coke 400 has produced several memorable races and crowned loads of first time winners in the Sprint Series. Fireball Roberts, who was the first winner of the race was also the first driver to win the race three times. He did so in 1959, 1962 and 1963. David Pearson became the first driver to win the race three consecutive times when he won it in 1972, 1973 and 1974.
Dale Earnhardt was a two time winner of the race (1990, 1993) and his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. is also a two time winner. They are the only father and son drivers to have won the race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is also the current defending Champion at the race.
The Coke Zero 400 also holds a special significance for racing legend Richard “The King” Petty. Richard Petty won it thrice over his career (1975, 1977 and 1984), and his 1984 victory was his iconic 200th racing victory. It also turned out to be his last victory. The 1984 race was also special since it was the first time that a sitting US President, Ronald Reagan, attended the race.
Live every year, the organizers of the Coke Zero 400 have arranged a number of events to keep the spectators entertained before and after the race. This year, the Daytona International Speedway will honor three war veterans and Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell, Specialist Ty Carter and Captain Florent Groberg. In lieu of Independence Day, these three national heroes will be honored for their services to their country.
As part of the preliminary entertainment events, there will also be a concert by country music duo, Montgomery Gentry. The multi-platinum selling artists and ACM Award winners will surely get everyone in the mood to have a good time.
