They started playing in National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1970 as an expansion team. However, it was in 2007 that they won their first Eastern Conference Championship. It was Nick Mileti who owned the club. The name "Cavaliers" was chosen through a competition and submitted by Jerry Tomko.

The team played at the home ground of Cleveland Arena with Bill Fitch acting as their head coach however they were unable to maintain a good playing record. It was a star player like Austin Carr who lent much charisma to the team with his awesome scoring records at Notre Dame. However, he couldn't serve the team's interests due to getting injured in the leg. Some other talent players were added in the team and the Cavaliers managed to improve their record by 23-59 in the following season. Further in 1972-73, the club commanded a 32-50 record, but moved back to 29-53 in 1973-74. The Cavaliers shifted to the brand-new Richfield Coliseum in 1974 where they secured a remarkable record of 40-42 a little short of a playoff berth.

Their pursuit of success led them to achieve a division title in the 1975-76 season with players like Smith, Snyder, Carr, Chones and Nate Thurmand who was newly inducted, brought glory to the team. A 49-33 record also fell in their destiny under the dynamic supervision of Coach Fitch. Eventually, Fitch was given league's Coach of the Year award at the same time when Cavaliers appeared in their first-ever playoff. The Washington Bullets were defeated by the club in a series with a score of 4-3. Since the players contributed their best in the games with last-second shots and heroic saves, the title of "Miracle of Richfield" was earned by the series. They failed to maintain their winning streak though and lost to the Boston Celtics in Eastern Conference Finals particularly because of the injuries caused to their star players.

In the next two seasons (1976-77 and 1977-78), the Cleveland Cavaliers won 43 games, however the outcome was of both seasons was early playoff exits. Fitch left his position when the team failed to prove itself after a 3-52 season. They have carried well with their The Cleveland Cavaliers debuted in NBA in 1970 with wine and gold as the team's original jerseys. In the mid-1980s, these were changed to orange and blue while the advent of mid-1990s showed blue, black and orange in the mid-1990s. The Cavaliers jersey was entirely redone in 2003, and darker shades of wine and gold (being the original colors) were adopted. Navy blue color was also added to create a uniform that was more in sync with the times.

The current home jersey of the Cavaliers is white, and the word "Cavaliers" is written on the front in white lettering with gold trim. The back shows the player's name in wine lettering while the player's numbers are printed in navy blue. The sides show gold and wine trim, and the shoes along with socks are also in white. For their road uniform, the wine color is again chosen with the player's numbers all in white lettering along with gold trim. The sides show off gold and white trim complemented with black socks and shoes.
