Based in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati Bengals play in the National Football League as the members of Northern Division of the American Football Conference. The team was formed in 1968, which is why they were initially the members of American Football League up till the AFL-NFL Merger. Bengals are one of the most experienced and competitive teams in the league, and they also happen to be the 2009 AFC North Division Title holders. The team plays its home games at the Paul Brown Stadium, while their training camp is held at the Georgetown College.
The team was formed back in 1968 and played as a member of American Football League. Initially in its inaugural season the team played its home games at the Nippert Stadium, which at the moment happens to be the home turf for the teams of University of Cincinnati Bearcats. After the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the team was placed in the American Football Conference Central. On the other hand, Cleveland Browns were placed in the same division, and so the long fiery rivalry between the two kicked off. In its inaugural season, the team finished with the record of 3-11, with Paul Robinson winning the title of AFL rookie of the year.
Cincinnati Bengals was founded by Paul Brown, who was also the team’s head coach for its first eight seasons. During his tenure, Brown devised a strategy of only drafting those college players to the team who had above average intelligence quotient, which is the reason why most of the Bengals went on to also have successful careers in various fields of arts and media. After playing their inaugural season in Nippert Stadium, the team was moved to Riverfront Stadium to play its home games. The Bengals shared the stadium with the Major League Baseball team Cincinnati Reds until the Bengals moved again in 2000 to the current home field of Paul Brown Stadium.
During their play in 70s, Cincinnati Bengals managed to make it to the playoffs at three occasions, but weren’t lucky enough to win the championship. Also during that decade in 1975, the team managed to give their highest winning percentage to date after posting a winning record of 11-3 that season. Thanks to that they earned a playoff spot, only to lose to Oakland Raiders in the divisional playoffs. During the following decade of 80s, Bengals made it to the Super Bowl twice only to lose from San Francisco 49ers on both of those occasions. Before his death, Paul Brown had transferred the control of the franchise to his son Mike Brown who went on to control the franchise after his death in 1990. This marked for the dark era in the franchise’s history as they went on to have a non winning record for 14 consecutive seasons. But the consistency of the team started to emerge as soon as Marvin Lewis took charge as the head coach of the team in 2003. The team made it to the playoffs for the first time in 2005 since their last appearance in 1990, and also improved their winning percentage considerably since 1990.
After 2005, Bengals made the next playoff appearance later in 2009, and moreover they also went on to win the divisional title that year for the first time. What added more joy to their victory was the fact the team defeated the Ravens and the Steelers, both of whom appeared in the AFC Championship game in the previous season. For accomplishing this feat, Marvin Lewis claimed the NFL Coach of the year Award.
The Bengals will enter this season as a seasoned team with some of the most valued players in its squad. They are aiming to outdo each and every opponent and fare well during all the home and away games. Can they make it to the playoffs or not is still to be seen. So if you’re a loyal supporter of the team then grab your Cincinnati Bengals tickets and support your team by being there!
