Founded in 1919, the Chicago Bears have been playing in the north division of NFC in National Football League. Over the years the club has produced several outstanding players and holds the record for the most number of inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After the clubs formation, George Halas and Edward Sternaman were hired to run the team. Halas is considered one of the pioneers of the sport and has always been associated with the game in one form or the other. Nicknamed by the fans as “Mr. Everything”, the multitalented man has been a player, inventor as well as a head coach. Under him Chicago Bears excelled in their early years and pretty much dominated the game.

In the first six years the club lost only two major games and gave the opposition a tough time. Due to the team’s strong performance and sharpness of their coach, they developed many rivals. Bears rivalry with Chicago Cardinals and Green Bay Packers is one of the oldest and fiercest in the American Professional Sports. Packers and Bears have been at each other’s throats since 1921 and all these years haven’t reduced the hostilities. Chicago Bears won their first NFL championship in 1921. Halas served as the backbone of the team and developed the young players into a fierce competitive side. They earned their second championship title in 1924 against the Cleveland Bulldogs. Having one winning season after the other, the club finally faced defeat in 1929. When the National Football League held their debut playoff game in 1932, the fans were treated to an exciting match between the Bears and Portsmouth Spartans.

The Chicago team crushed Portsmouth 9-0, as this historic game also marked the first indoor football game at the famous Chicago Stadium. This newly invented playoff style was greatly appreciated by other clubs as well as the fans. Following its success, NFL decided to develop its own championship along with specially designed rules, which set them free from the college football system. This decision by the management paved way for a new era in the professional American football. National Football League organized its first championship in 1933 and once again it was the Bears who appeared at the top. 40s also saw the Chicago Bears on the rise and they soared even further after the recruitment of the sensational quarterback, Sid Luckman. Through his powerful playing the club won four out of five NFL Championships of that era. In 1965 Luckman was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the team also retired his number 42. In 1940 the Bears once again created history by defeating Washington Redskins in a one sided game, where the final score was 73-0. The record still remains unbroken as no other club has been able to match the offensive formation that Halas created at that time. The late 60s and the early 70s produced the hall of famer Gale Sayers and the brilliant Brian Piccolo.

The duo led the team to great victories and even inspired producers to make a film on them. In 1971 American television network ABC aired the famous movie, “Brian’s Song” that was based on the life and the game of these two legendary players. The actor Jack Warden even won an Emmy for his role as Halas. Late 70s gave rise to another phenomenal Bears player, Walter Payton. Playing as a running back, he held multiple records for the league and has been described by fellow sportsmen as the greatest football player ever seen. In 1993 Payton was inducted in the Football Hall of Fame and his number 34 was also retired by the club. From the 80s till date, Chicago Bears graph has fluctuated often, though the team had another NFL title to their name in 1985.
