In 1985 the NBA decided to add four new expansion franchises. They started to listen to the proposals put forward by the representatives from each city applying to get a basketball franchise. The city of Charlotte is the biggest in the state of Carolina yet did not have any sports team in the four major professional sports leagues. They did however have several minor league sides as well as quite a few colleges playing in the state, all of which enjoyed decent attendance records. This prompted George Shinn, a local entrepreneur and his business partners to bid for a new basketball franchise.
The biggest problem at the time was the lack of an adequately sized basketball arena in Charlotte for the new team. That hindrance was overcome by the construction of the Charlotte Coliseum, a purpose built arena capable of seating more than twenty four thousand people at a time. The Charlotte Coliseum tipped the scales in the city’s favor and it was awarded its very own franchise in 1987 which was scheduled to begin playing from the 1988 season.
The name for the new team was selected through a public poll and the Hornets name was chosen. This was a reference to the brave and resilient way the city of Charlotte resisted the British during the revolutionary war. The British General of the Army called the city ‘a veritable hornet's nest.’
The Hornets made a slow start to life in the league and it took them five years before they could record their first winning season. That year marked their first appearance in the playoffs as well. The acquisition of players like Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Glen Rice and Muggsy Bogues helped them achieve stability during the nineties. That earned them several more trips to the playoffs. It also helped them improve their win/loss ratio as the Hornets became a competitive side in the NBA.
Falling attendance records as well as financial troubles led to the side relocating to New Orleans in 2002. It was decided that the records and legacy of the Hornets franchise would remain with the city of Charlotte in the future. There was no basketball franchise located in Charlotte for the next two years. However this changed when the NBA decided to award a new expansion side only if a new arena deal could be worked out with the city. An agreement was reached by the end of 2002 and Robert L. Johnson and his group of investors were awarded a new team soon after.
The new side was named the Bobcats before the name reverted back to the Hornets in 2014. Since the formation of the Bobcats, the team has gone through several changes as well as erratic performances. However things have started to look up over the past few years, especially after the legendary Michael Jordan bought the controlling interest in 2010. Under his tutelage they have acquired several prospective star players and have improved their financial stability as well.
Last season was quite satisfactory for the Hornets. They managed to qualify for the playoffs after an absence of three years and this is a sign that they are steadily putting things right. Under Jordon, they are a more stable unit and it looks as if it is finally time for them to break out and show the world what they are capable of.
Who knows this might be the season when they make it count. Grab your Charlotte Hornets tickets and watch a team in transition in its quest to finally reach its true potential.
