History of CD Guadalajara
The Mexican team was founded by Edgar Everaert in 1906 and the initial kit was designed in keeping with the founder’s then favorite team, the Belgian Brugge K.V. Initially, the club began as Club Union de Futbol but not long after, its name was changed in honor of its native city. In 1908, the founding members of the club defined a philosophy for it, which would continue on to serve as the image of the Mexican club – to this day. Influenced by the revolutionary period that the country was experiencing at the time, it was decided that the Club Guadalajara would contain only Mexican-born members. It was evident from very early on that in addition to success in the world of sports, one of the club members’ main goal was to celebrate the pride of their city and the culture of the entire nation as well. The club members even choose to stick to the red, white and blue colors that were initially chosen by the founder.
CD Guadalajara Performance
Over the years, the Mexican soccer giant has seen several ups and downs. It has won 13 amateur titles in 33 years and in 1943, went on to become a professional club. More than a decade later, they won their first championship in 1956. In nine years, the club has won a total of seven titles and rightly earned its position as the class of Mexican soccer. Many of its players from that time period are now considered legends in the world of soccer, including defender Jose “Jamaicon” Villegas, goalkeeper Jaime “Tubi” Gomez and midfielder Juan “Bigoton” Jasso. Due to their immense success in this period, the team was often invited to play exhibition games around the world by clubs such as the popular FC Barcelona.
The club gained its name ‘Chivas’ when it entered the world of professional football. The Spanish word, which literally translates into ‘goat’, was coined by a reporter after the club had a surprise 1-0 win over Tampico in 1948. The reporter, not pleased with the results, wrote that the team played like “hopping goats”. Initially the label “Chivas” was used as an insult by the team’s opponents but soon became accepted by the club and its fans.
After going through a slump period in the 1970s, the club recently returned to form that shows that the Chivas are still one of Mexico’s top teams. The team, largely relying on youngsters, continues to be one of the most exciting soccer clubs to watch in action.
