Playing at BGSU’s Doyt Perry Stadium, The Falcons’ football team has won ten conference competitions, only being crossed by its rival, Miami RedHawks. Kent State Golden Flashes is another rival for the Falcons but the toughest rival is Toledo Rockets. This rivalry goes back to 1924 when Toledo’s captain, Gilbert Stick was challenged by BGSU. This challenge was overruled because Stick played for a local team and according to conference rules, this was not allowed. Now the Falcons and Rockets are in competition for the Battle of I-75 and the winner proudly gets to take the Peace Pipe Trophy home. Golden Flashes and Falcons have also been competing for the Anniversary Award, a yearly football rivalry that started between the two universities in 1985. Some famous Falcon football players are Shaun Suisham, Don Nehlen and Kory Lichtensteiger. Coaches who are a part of College Football Hall of Fame, such as Don Nehlen and Doyt Perry and other notable ones like Urban Meyer have coached The Falcons.
The Falcons also have been champions in women’s basketball, standing second only to the university’s football team as the most popular and prominent one. This team has won eleven regular seasons, five division competitions and ten conference championships, including three consecutive wins in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Twice, it has made it to the AIAW tournament and nine times to the NCAA tournament. Curt Miller is the team’s current coach and has a record of winning more than two hundred games as head coach.
The Falcon’s ice hockey team went on to win one national title, defeating Minnesota Duluth by one goal in the longest NCAA game of four overtimes and is the only BGSU team that has won a national title. Jerry York and Ron Mason are two prominent coaches of The Falcons ice hockey. Currently, they are being coached by former RedHawks coach, Chris Bergeron.
The Falcons’ Rugby team is also one of the most successful college rugby teams in the U.S. Initiated in 1968, there are over eighty members in the club and there is an average of nine wins for each loss.
