For almost the first thirty years, they played in Junior College competitions. When the college became a varsity, the teams started playing in Big Sky Conference Div 1 - AA. As of present the Broncos play for the Western Athletic Conference and in the coming years, they would play for Mountain West Conference.

The Broncos compete in a variety of sports but the most well known of their teams definitely is the Boise State Broncos Football team. The football team is the pride of not just the varsity's entire athletic program but for the fans as well. The team had a dream run in 2006 when they had a fantastic lose less victory season with 13 - 0. The outstanding performance was followed by a magnificent win in the Fiesta Bowl in 2007 which was an icing on the cake for the fans. The fans believe that this was a one of the most brilliant play by the Broncos ever which would set them in the mood for the upcoming preseason games. Some of the other brilliant performers for the varsity’s athletic program have been their Men's and Women's Track & Field teams who won several National Championships.
