The Big 12 Conference sponsors multiple sports for men and women. Ten institutions are part of the conference. There were eight charter members of this conference, namely Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech,Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. They were joined by a further two institutions, West Virginia and TCU in July 2012. These schools are the only addition to the conference from the time it was formed in 1997. First basketball National Trophy
In 2008 the winner of the Big 12 Conference, Kansas Jayhawks went on to compete in the post season national tournament. They defeated the top ranked North Carolina in the semifinals and earned a spot in the national finals against North Carolina. Kansas defeated North Carolina in overtime to become the National Champions. The Kansas Jayhawks brought the first NCAA Tournament Championship to the Big 12 Conference since it was created in 1997.
Apart from the lone title, many teams from the Big 12 Conference have earned NCAA bids. In just the past five years alone seven teams have made their way to the NCAA Tournament. Six coaches from the Big 12 Conference have led the team to Final Four stage of the National Tournament.
Big 12 basketball tournament venues
Kansas City is associated with the Big 12 basketball tournament since it has hosted the annual event the most number of times. Kemper Arena in Missouri was the venue for the first six years, after which the event was hosted in Dallas at the American Airlines Center. Dallas remained the as the location from 2003 to 2006. In 2007 and 2009 the tournament was held in Oklahoma City. The Big 12 Basketball Tournament returned to Kansas in 2008, but this time it was held at the Sprint Center. It was decided that it will remain as the venue till 2016.
2015 winner of the Big 12 Basketball Tournament
The tournament held in 2015 saw the second seeded team in the tournament, Iowa State take on the top ranked, Kansas in the final. Iowa State came forward after defeating Oklahoma in the semis, while Kansas defeated Baylor in the round up to the final. The Championship game was eventually won by Iowa State with a score line of sixty six to seventy. This marked the fourth Big 12 tournament win for the Iowa State Cyclones and the second title in as many years. They continued the tradition of winning the final when they reached it, with an impressive hundred percent win ratio in four outings.
The Big 12 hierarchy
The Kansas Jayhawks are still leading the Big 12 Conference with the most titles. They have featured in the final eleven times and have been crowned the winner nine times. The Jayhawks are followed by the Iowa State Cyclones in second place, with their four titles from four appearances in the final game. Oklahoma State is ranked at third place with three titles, followed by Oklahoma State and Missouri with two titles apiece.
