Baltimore Blast is Major Indoor Soccer League’s professional team belonging to Baltimore, Maryland. The club was formed in July of 1992 by the name of Baltimore Spirit by Bill Stealey a software executive from North Carolina. In 2001, Baltimore Blast became a part of the new Major Indoor Soccer League. It was the second league that came into existence by this name. Initially, it started off by the name of National Indoor Soccer League but later bought the rights from dissolved MISL, hence the name was changed too. The current MISL started its first season in 2008, with a total of five teams. Three of these teams were a part of the previous MISL and one belonged to American Indoor Soccer League. At present, MISL is among the top indoor soccer leagues within the United States. The league’s current champions are Milwaukee Wave.
Baltimore Blast play their home games at 1st Mariner Arena. The stadium is situated near Baltimore Convention Center on the corner of Hopkins Place and Baltimore Street. Inner Harbor is also situated nearby. In 1962, the place originally opened by the name of Baltimore Civic Center. The arena was built on the spot where Continental Congress held meeting in 1776. Since then, it has been transformed in a number of ways several times, and currently, the stadium is home ground to a number of Baltimore sports teams including Baltimore Blast.
Baltimore Blast’s current head coach is Danny Kelly. He was formerly a mid fielder. Kelly graduated from Penn State University, where he was a part of their college soccer team. Even during his college years, Kelly managed to gain honors and recognitions nationally. In Major Soccer League draft of 1991, Kelly was chosen by Kansas City Comets. However, he did not sign to Comets. His professional career originally began when he joined National Professional Soccer League’s club Harrisburg Heat. In 2001, he joined Major Indoor Soccer League as a part of Baltimore Blasts. Currently, he ranks a number twenty in All-Time scoring list of the league.
Baltimore Blast has produced a number of famous players. Some of the notable past players include Jason Dieter, Tony McPeak and PJ Wakefield. Some of their players that have been included in Hall of Fame are Kenny Cooper, Rusty Troy, Pat Ercoli, Tim Wittman, Brue Savage, Dough Neely and Joey Fink.
