Soccer actually has a major fan following in the United States and the Major League Soccer is always looking to expand and add more teams to the league.
The Founding of Atlanta United FC
Atlanta for a long time was one of the largest metropolitan areas which didn’t have its own MLS franchise.
In 2008, Arthur Blank’s AMB Group decided to bid for an expansion franchise. Even though the bid was withdrawn due to problems with constructing a stadium for a potential team, the MLS continued discussions with Blank about an expansion team. In 2011, hope came in the form of the Atlanta Thrashers, a team in the NHL, relocating to Winnipeg, and vacating their stadium. This re-kindled the talks to bring an MLS team to Atlanta.
The following year, Blank proposed a new stadium for his NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons. During the proposal process Blank said that the stadium could also help to attract a potential Major League Soccer franchise. MLS Commissioner Don Garber was intrigued by Atlanta’s potential for a MLS team and said that if the Falcons’ new stadium was completed, he would try to figure out how an MLS team could be part of their plans.
In 2013, the city of Atlanta and the Falcons came to a decision and it was decided that the new stadium will be opened in 2017. A key feature of the new stadium was that it could also be used for professional soccer.
After a long period of negotiations, in April 2014 the MLS awarded an expansion franchise to Blank and the city of Atlanta. The new team would make its debut and begin playing in 2017. This made Atlanta the second franchise that the MLS awarded to a city in the southeastern United States in five months, the other one being the Orlando City, SC.
About the Team
In 2015, Atlanta United FC officially debuted their name, colors, as well as their logo. The colors they decided to use were black, victory red and gold. Black is intended to be a symbol of power and strength, victory red represents passion and pride, and gold represents a commitment to excellence.
The logo of the team is a circle which features a bold uppercase ‘A’ in the middle. Behind the letter there are five stripes in black and red. These represent the five pillars of the team: determination, excellence, unity, community, and innovation.
The head coach for the team is Argentinian Gerardo "Tata" Martino. Martino previously coached the Argentina national team and even led them to two Copa América finals.
On March 5, 2017 the Atlanta United FC played their debut game in the MLS. They went up against the New York Red Bulls at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium.
It is reported that their inaugural match drew record breaking crowds. In fact that game had the fourth largest attendance out of any soccer game around the world being held over that weekend behind Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Manchester United.
