Formed as a franchise in 1946 by the name of Buffalo Bisons, The Atlanta Hawks is an American professional basketball team. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia with Mike Woodson as its coach leading in his fifth season. Center Don Otten and coach Nat Hickey were the team's first stars and in 1946, the team moved to Illinois on owner's Ben Kerner's discretion. The region was then known as "Tri-Cities" and currently labeled as Quad Cities. The team was thus named the Tri-Cities Blackhawks by Kerner. Blackhawks was chosen due to its association with a war fought in Illinois.

The team has had a shining career though not free of recurrent failures. In 1957, the team lost to Boston Celtics in game seven. Then under coach Alex Hannum, the Hawks progressed to the NBA Finals winning the NBA Championship. In the coming decade, the team occupied the slot as one of the prime teams of NBA. The Celtics again defeated The Atlanta Hawks in a game seven thriller in the Finals in 1960. They got back their lost ground with new rookie Lenny Wilkens repeating their success, however lost again to the Celtics in Finals in five games.

The Atlanta Hawks played well over the years, fetching several division titles and going deep into the playoffs. Kerner had to face the choice of moving the stadium to St. Louis Arena from the old venue of Kiel Auditorium since it was waning out. However, since the new stadium had not been well maintained so it stopped him to do so and he wished to have a new arena for increased income. Towards the late 60's, Atlanta real estate developer and Governor of Georgia bought the team, and thus the team moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

A new arena was thus constructed and during construction, a memorial site in Georgia was temporarily used by The Atlanta Hawks men for playing. Omni Coliseum was built soon by the owners which was state-of-the-art arena in the area. The site also included a hockey franchise which opened in 1972 as the first phase of a grand complex housing office, sports, retail and hotel. CNN Center presently takes over the building premises.   

The Atlanta Hawks performed as a progressive team in the later years but success was not continuous. They went through a time of rebuilding where they ultimately landed in the top picks in the 1975 NBA Draft.
Billy Knight became the general manager of The Atlanta Hawks steering the team into the right course of direction. He left the team in July 2008. He was put off by some politics in the team management attempting to fire coach Mike Woodson. The team is faring very well currently. It had its first season full of wins since 1989-99 defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves. It earned a home-court advantage over Miami Heat in the playoffs. Miami Heat lost to The Atlanta Hawks in several games. What a team with a brilliant career and a long way to go!
