The Sports scene in USA thrives at the professional level but many of those sports are nurtured at college/university level. The college sports teams at the University of Arkansas are called the Razorbacks. Their full name is Arkansas Razorbacks which refers to any of the University sports teams (men or women). The school mascot was originally the Cardinals but it was changed to the Arkansas Razorbacks in 1910 as voted by the student body in 1910. The University decided to employ the Razorback Hog as its mascot owing to the fact that the Razorback name was in practice by the Texarkana Arkansas Razorbacks. The Arkansas Razorbacks are currently listed as the only major sports team in USA that carry a porcine nickname.

A total of 19 varsity teams are fielded by the University of Arkansas including 8 men's and 11 women's in 13 sports. Men's sports include football, tennis, golf, basketball, cross country, baseball and track and field while the women's sports comprise golf, soccer, indoor track, basketball, cross country, gymnastics, indoor track, softball, volleyball, tennis, outdoor track, swimming and diving. The Arkansas Razorbacks are part of the Southeastern Conference (Western Division) and contest in the NCAA's Division I.

Arkansas Razorbacks football team enjoys the dynamic coaching of Bobby Petrino who assumed the responsibility in December 2007. Before that, Houston Nutt served ten seasons with the team as the coach. The home ground of the team is Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium situated on the University of Arkansas campus but it also switches to War Memorial Stadium. The Razorbacks were awarded the Football Writers Association of America National Championship in 1964 besides being the only team to go undefeated through a bowl game and regular season. The celebrated quarterback Bill Montgomery headed the 1969 team which gave the Texas Longhorns a tough time for a national championship in the Game of the Century.

Arkansas Razorbacks Basketball is coached by John Pelphrey. He has been associated with such shining names in basketball like Billy Donovan, Eddie Sutton and Rick Pitino. The Bud Walton Arena is the home ground of the basketball team. It was coach Eddie Sutton who helped the team achieve great achievements and converted it into one of the top 10 NCAA programs of all time. The Razorbacks defeated Duke University in 1994 under the guidance of Nolan Richardson thus winning the NCAA tournament. They appeared again next year but were beaten by UCLA. The team has made it to Final Four in NCAA six times (1941, 1945, 1978, 1990, 1994 and 1995). Out of these, the first two were realized before the final four teams were gathered by the NCAA in one site.

When it comes to rivalry, the Longhorns of the University of Texas had been promising much of that to the Arkansas Razorbacks. However, the rivalry has cooled down ever since both teams were segregated in different conferences at the start of 1990s allowing little clash between them. Arkansas retain the series lead in basketball whereas Texas own the series lead in football. Texas A&M is another rival which has been playing annually with the Razorbacks in almost all sports.

The University of Arkansas Razorbacks has a number of costumed mascots that bring most major sporting events to life. The traditional mascot for the University is Big Red which correlates with the daunting fighting spirit of the Razorbacks. A female hog also adds value to the teams and is famous for her dancing flair, not to forget costume changes carrying the name Sue. A kid mascot named as Pork Chop is also a part of the mascot team. Lastly, a nine-foot inflatable mascot called Boss Hog cannot be ignored which was included in the mascot family during the 1998-99 football season.
