AMA Supercross idea was conceived somewhere around 1972, Motocross bike event was very popular among bikers in which the bikers had to drive their motorcycles over man made dirt tracks that are usually uneven and rugged to make the sport risky and thrilling. So famous race promoter Michael Godwin arranged a mega bike event in the famous Los Angeles Coliseum and this was the foundation of AMA Supercross. The main differences between Supercross and Motocross are that all Supercross events are specifically held in baseball or football stadiums whereas Motocross can take place at any open field or venue, both events have man made dirt tracks but Supercross tracks are much more steep and high to make the sport more risky, dangerous but much more stimulating.
The event has been held for more then 3 decades now but in the early 2000’s its popularity has increased tremendously and now AMA Supercross is rated as the 2nd most viewed racing show after Nascar. The event has 2 bike classes one is called the Supercross Class consisting of 250c bikes and the second one is known as Supercross Lites consisting of 125cc bikes and is further subdivided into Lites West and East, 250cc category is termed more prestigious. Supercross normally takes off somewhere around the last weeks of December and the competitions continue till mid-May, there are 17 rounds in Supercross Class Category with 8 laps and 8 rounds each in both Lites East and West with 6 laps, after different stages there is a final shoot-out between East and West to qualify for the final event. During the grand-finale 22 riders are selected for a 15 lap match in Supercross Lites and 20 riders are chosen for a 22 lap final in the Supercross Class, if the track has been affected by rainfall then the laps are reduced.
A new form of Supercross has also emerged in the past few years and that is called Arenacross or in short just AX, this form of dirt biking has also gained publics attention and it takes place usually in cities that don’t have big stadium like venues so the events are held in ice-hockey or even basketball stadiums. Arenacross is also proving to be an important training ground for amateur bikers who want to take part in AMA Supercross so they initially become a part of AX and then move on to Supercross. Some of the current Supercross champions are Ryan Dungey in 2010 and James Stewart Jr. in 2009 in Supercross Class and Christophe Pourcel has won Supercross Lites East 2 times in 2009 and 2010. Famous dirt track rider Jeremy McGrath is the only man who has won 7 Supercross championships in 250cc.
