In its debut, Zappa Plays Zappa was made up of Dweezil Zappa as its lead guitarist as well as several musicians who had played with Frank Zappa, such as Napoleon Murphy Brock who played the sax and the flute as well as providing vocals. Artists like was an drummer Terry Bozzio as well as electric guitarist Steve Vai also performed with the band as guest performers. Zappa Plays Zappa continued its previous series of tours again in 2008 with much of its previous lineup. The 2008 tour again featured Steve Vai as a guest performer strumming his electronic guitar to the awe of fans attending the shows. The band toured across the US and on to Canada. In 2009, the band won a remarkable Grammy Award as the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the band’s performance of the Frank Zappa song, Peaches en Regalia. This was an amazing achievement and a spectacular moment for the whole band. The band again went on tour in 2009 like the previous years; however, this time around the band saw some of its members leave. Aaron Arntz left the band followed by Ray White. The band then brought on board Ben Thomas as its lead vocalist after auditions and then went on a US, Canada and Europe tour.
In 2009, the band toured alongside the legendary rock and metal band, Dream Theater, in its Progressive Nation 09 tour. This was followed by yet another fall tour in 2009 as well as their usual end of the year performances. In 2010, the band saw some amazing performances such as playing the whole album Apostrophe. At present, Zappa Plays Zappa is made up of Dweezil Zappa as the band’s lead guitarist, Scheila Gonzalez playing the saxophone, the flute, the keyboards as well as on vocals, Pete Griffin as the band’s bassist, Billy Hulting playing the marimba, mallets as well as the band’s percussionist, Jamie Kime playing the guitar, Joe Travers the band’s drummer as well as on vocals, Ben Thomas the band’s lead vocalist as well as trumpeter and Chris Norton as the band’s keyboardist and violinist.
