The Colorado quartet, Yonder Mountain String Band with its unique way of guitar plucking and string strumming redefined the genre of blue grass music by topping it with energy. The sound of blue grass music never sounded so different until the late nineties when the String band redefined it with the blending of country music and jazz elements together. With the band’s self defined rules for playing music, its sound cannot be confined to single specific music genres. Neither can it be titled as ‘String Music’ nor ‘Blue Grass’ but for the Mountains it is rather a matter of looking at music from their own perspective.
 

The multitalented Jeff Austin, Ben Kauffman, Dave Johnston and Adam Aijala got together to form the well known Yonder Mountain String Band in 1998. They weren’t only adept at playing their respective instruments but also possessed magnetic vocals that had the perfect ability to mesmerize the audiences in a single go. Initially its sound of music was defined by the traditional play of mandolin, banjo, guitar and bass. Their first platform for making initial live performances was the bars and local clubs.
