Finding fame

It is said that you can achieve anything as long as you put your heart and soul into it. Yasiin Bey did that as a result of which he became one of the most sought after names in the music industry. Popular by his stage name, Mos Def, he kicked off his career in rap music in the mid 90s. Def formed a group, UTD with his sister, Ces and younger brother, DCQ. The trio came out with their first and only album, ‘Manifest Destiny.’

In 1996, Mos started to make ripples in the industry as a solo artist and worked with stars like, Da Bush Babees and De La Soul before he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form a rap group, Black Star. The duo put out their record, ‘Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star’ which arrived in the markets in 1998. Their record impressed the critics and entered the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums at the thirteenth spot. It also gave a couple of singles, Definition and Respiration both of which were charted on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Black on Both Sides

A year before the start of new millennium, Yesiin Bey made an impact in the industry by releasing his debut album, ‘Black on Both Sides’ through Rawkus in 1999. The record gave him international success. It reached the 25th spot on the Billboard 200 and sold over nine hundred thousand copies in the United States. Moreover, many publications like the Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, NME and Pitchfork Media published positive reviews regarding, ‘Black on Both Sides.’ Yasiin’s debut solo effort was also supported by two singles out of which, Ms. Fat Booty climbed to the twentieth spot on the Hot Rap Songs.

Yasiin Bey’s second studio album, ‘The New Danger’ hit the shelves five years later in 2004. The record contributed to his rise to fame. It entered the Billboard 200 at fifth spot and became his most commercially successful solo effort to date. The album sold in excess of five hundred thousand copies in the United States. ‘The New Danger’ also received positive reviews from the critics and received four stars out of five from the Rolling Stone.

True Magic and The Ecstatic

After setting the world of rap music on fire by releasing his first two albums, Yasiin Bey stole the spotlight once again with his third studio effort, ‘True Magic’ which saw the light of day in 2006. Despite the record’s haphazard release, it still managed to get positive remarks from Boston Herald. It also spawned a single Undeniable which earned him a nomination for a Grammy in the category of ‘Best Rap Solo Performance.’

Eleven months later in 2007, Yasiin Bey surprised his fans by announcing the name of his next studio record, ‘The Ecstatic’ while he was performing in San Francisco’s The Mezzanine. The album came out a couple of years later in the summer of 2009 and featured collaborations by names like Slick Rick, Talib Kweli and Georgia Anne Muldrow. It reached the fifth spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Not just a hip-hop star

Yasiin Bey’s talent is not only confined to rap music but he has showed his incredible skills as an actor too. He has worked both in television sitcoms and Broadway shows.
