Mainly of Greek origin, Yanni shifted to the United States to study psychology and was awarded an honorary Doctorate degree of Humane Letters in 2005. Born in Kalamata, Greece in November of 1954, very little is known about Yanni’s early life. According to some sources, he started to play the piano when he was six years old. His father, who was a trader, encouraged his son to learn music even though he could not afford a music teacher. In 1972, Yanni moved to the United States to learn psychology at the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, he received a Bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1976 after getting his honorary Doctorate degree.
While he was a student, Yanni used to play various keyboard instruments including the piano. It wasn’t before the year 1977 that he joined the rock band Chameleon and worked closely with its founder, Charlie Adams. Some of the most popular albums by this musician include Chameleon Days, Out of Silence and Keys to Imagination. Dare to Dream, one of the best Yanni’s works was released in 1992 and went on to be nominated for a Grammy Award. Another super hit album, In My Time, released the following year was also nominated for a Grammy.
