Initially the founding members of the music band namely Peter, Cobb and Nicholas performed as part of an indie pop band, YOU. They played along the group at various venues and clubs for over a decade. As a matter of joke, they once decided to play the 70s soft rock numbers at a nightclub show. Surprisingly the act became extremely popular amongst the fans. They tried the formula again and it worked perfectly.
The phrase ‘Yacht Rock’ has been popularly used to describe various hit YouTube videos that tell fictionalized tales about the soft rock songs of the 70s and 80s. Amongst the popular influences for such cover songs include renowned artists like Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, Little River Band, Carly Simon, Gerry Rafferty, Kenny Loggins, Hall and Oates, Boz Scaggs and Gino Vannelli. With this trend setting in, the anachronistic smooth rock sound became the play of numerous discos and pubs.
For the newly emerged Yacht Rock Revue, this meant a lot of offers and opportunities to perform. Niespodziani and Olsen are quoted as describing their fans as ‘college kids’ and ‘baby boomers’ looking out to recapture or relive their glorious carefree days.
Though primarily a tribute band, the innovative musicians constantly experiment with their shows. Their theme based acts have been met with a terrific response on the part of the live concert crowd. They have also ventured into original music making as well as comedy. Yacht Rock Revue makes an extra effort to keep their gigs appealingly fresh and increasingly entertaining. Their music and concerts are thus never monotonous and embody an element of surprise for the audience. By blurring the line between an original act, a tribute and a comedy troupe, Yacht Rock Revue today enjoys a special bond with a vast and diverse fan base. As a cover band, the artists treat each number with as much passion and zeal as if it were their own. The vibrancy and enthusiasm exchanged between the performers and the spectators is no less than that witnessed in a packed arena of a U2 concert.
During their career, Yacht Rock revue and their acts have been tagged with several interesting titles. These include ‘Best Overall Music Act in Atlanta’, ‘Best Place to start an Extra Marital Affair’ and ‘Best Place to Get Drunk with Your Dad’.
In their recent self-titled EP, the band recreates the studio sounds of ‘70s AM Gold’. The five-track disc consists of a rich variety in terms of music style. The blue eyed soul number ‘LA Lindsay’ is one of the prominent hits of the collection. ‘Cartoon Butterfly’ is another popular song of the record. The album was produced by Peter Stroud and Athens legend David Barbe.
Over the years, Yacht Rock Revue has given several hit performances in various cities and venues. They have shared the stage with notable names of the music industry such as Gary Wright, Robbie Dupree, Peter Beckett of Player, Elliot Lurie of Looking Glass, Walter Egan, Starbuck, Little River Band, Yacht Rock Schooner and Ambrosia.
The band is now ready to embark upon a new series of music concerts this summer. They will be joined by special guests including Bobby Kimball (former lead vocalist of TOTO), Jeff Carlisi of 38 SPECIAL, Bill Champlin of Chicago and many more. So get your Yacht Rock Revue tickets and join the musicians to celebrate the popular 70s and 80s soft rock beats.
