The hit 90s R&B girl-group Xscape went on hiatus at a high in the early 2000s saddening their legions of fans. With them, the nature of R&B changed as well and their singing traditions pretty much died after the split. However, despite differences between group members Kandi Buruss and Tamika Scott and their solo career commitments, Xscape has been returning into the spotlight with some significant reunions. They firstly released a documentary titled “Still kickin’ it” which recounts what has passed in the ten years since the split. In September 2017, they performed on stage at the BET Awards and have announced concert dates in the US. Needless to say, Xscape fans are excited and Xscape tickets for these shows are in high demand.
Xscape is an all-female R&B group which started off in the 90s and concluded a successful career in 2004. Over this period, the group produced three consecutive platinum selling records and six top-ten singles. They became one of the fastest growing acts of the 90s and particularly gained a great deal of fame due to their vocal harmonies. The band included sisters La Tocha Scott, Tamika Scott, Kandi Buruss and Tameka “Tiny” Cottle. The girls met living in the same community and began going to Church together. The church choir was their first exposure to music and they practiced their harmonies at that. However, Tamika and La Tocha’s father was an R&B singer and Tiny’s father was part of an R&B group as well. So the group had star quality from the beginning, something that Jermaine Dupri identified early on. He signed the girls for their first album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha as Xscape.
Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha
This was the first of their commercial platinum successes and also resulted in a lot of screen time for the band. It led them to an appearance on the hit television show Beverly Hills 90210; they made a cameo at a charity benefit, singing their song in a concert. The group then recorded the soundtrack to The Mask a movie starring Jim Carrey. They also appeared on, and recorded the track “Freedom” for the movie Panther.
Off the Hook
This second album was released in 1996, and instantly gained platinum status. “Feels So Good” was the album’s lead single and it reached #31 on the US Hot 100 and “Who Can I Run To” rose up to #8. Given to their newfound recognition, many other esteemed artists collaborated on this album: MC Lyte featured on “Can’t Hang”. This song was featured along with “Do You Want To” were released as double-A side singles.
Traces of My Lipstick
This album fast approached the millennium and featured a cover of Ol’ Skool’s “Am I Dreamin’”. This single ranked 31 on the Hip-hop Charts and became the album’s lead single. It also featured the Top 7 hit song “The Arms of the One Who Loves You” And top 9 hit “My Little Secret”. This album too reached platinum status and gained the group a hat-trick of platinum records.
La Tocha’s Departure
“Traces of My Lipstick” was also the last record on which the original Xscape members featured because La Tocha left the group after it to pursue a solo career. At the time, it was said that there were simply conflicts of interest, however, over the years; La Tocha has opened up about grievances with Kandi Buruss and the group management which have been resolved as well. At the time though, La Tocha’s loss was a huge blow to Xscape and its remaining members could not sustain it. The group crumbled and broke up.
La Tocha, Tamika and Tiny attempted a comeback, five years after the breakup; however, they were not able to maintain this. They recruited a new member, Kiesha Miles and recorded a fourth album, titled “Unchained”. Its new single, “What’s Up” was later released on a mix tape, but the rest of the album did not release due to lack of resources to promote it.
The Out of the Blue Reunion
In the mid of 2017, Xscape’s members announced a new documentary titled “Still Kickin’ It” on Bravo TV which documents the rise and fall of the group. With the release of the movie, Xscape was offered a performance at the BET Awards, which became an instant hit. The crowd, well-versed in the band’s discography, loved the mash-up the girls presented. The band has followed this performance up with more concerts around the country. Could this be the return of Xscape? That is yet to be known, but Xscape tickets for their exclusive shows are available now.
Xscape, Monica and Tamar Braxton
Xscape’s reunion tour is also a celebration of the best in 90s’ R&B music. As a result, they have recruited sisters Monica and Tamar Braxton on this trek as well. The sisters are well-known in the world of reality TV as well as soul music. The two started performing as the “Braxton Sisters” in the early 1990s. They released hit solo records such as “So Many Ways” (1996).
The sisters have also maintained successful solo careers. Monica released her first album in 1995 titled “Miss Thang”. Tamar followed suit a few years later with a self-titled album in the 2000s. The sisters also became reality television personalities with their hit series “Braxton Family Values”. They are well-known artists in America and have remained relevant for over twenty years. Therefore, seeing them back on stage doing what they started with all those years ago is going to be a treat for their fans. Do not miss the sisters as they feature as special guests on the Xscape Reunion Tour.
