Born in Torquay in 1978, Rudd was fond of music since childhood. Before pursuing a solo career, he performed with the music band Xavier and the Hum. Among his inspirations are Natalie Merchant, David Lindley, Leo Kottke and Ben Harper. His compositions also carry the influences of Native American and Hawaiian music.
As a child Rudd self learnt the circular breathing technique by practicing on his vacuum cleaner tube at home. This technique is used to produce a continuous uninterrupted tune. It needs to be learnt in order to play the instrument didgeridoo which the music artist mastered in the years to follow. However, Rudd did not restrict himself to a couple of instruments and took keen interest in acquiring other music skills such as playing the guitar, saxophone and the clarinet. He put his creativity to good use by combining several instruments to produce new and unique sound arrangements. This included playing bass lines on the guitar along with finger picking on the lower strings.
Xavier Rudd is much more popular for his live acts than for his studio records. He travels extensively and has earned a huge and devoted fan base ever since he began his professional music journey back in 2000. Having gained considerable fan following and recognition, Xavier toured along renowned music artists like G. Love & Special Sauce and Jack Johnson. Another one of his live albums came out in 2005. Titled ‘Good Spirit’, it features the recordings of three of the performer’s gigs in Australia. The same year Xavier recorded a studio album ‘Food in the Belly.’ It consists of contributions by guest artists like Harry Manx and Beth Preston. This record was certified Platinum in Australia.
Other music collections by the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter include two live albums; ‘Live Bonnaroo 2005’ and ‘Live Boneroo 2008’, and four studio albums including ‘White Moth,’ ‘Dark shades of Blue,’ ‘Koonyum Sun,’ and the most recent ‘Spirit Bird.’ The latter debuted on the 36th spot of the Canadian Albums chart while at number two on the ARIA Album chart.
