The music that Woody Allen and the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band perform draws inspiration from artists Allen grew up listening to. These include Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone and Louis Armstrong. Woody Allen and his band regularly host Monday night concerts at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. It is extremely difficult to get Woody Allen tickets and one must get tickets in advance.
Music and style
The seven-member band has a repertoire of more than twelve hundred songs. What is equally impressive is that the band does not have a set list and neither do the musicians know which song Allen and Davis will call out next. The element of surprise is characteristic of any Woody Allen and his Jazz Band performance. Their distinctive performing style distinguishes them from other bands and is the main reason why they have toured Europe multiple times. 1996 marked their first European tourand this year they have already completed visits to Greece and Turkey.
A typical show according to Jerry Zigmont (trombonist for the band)
An exclusive interview with Jerry Zigmont reveals what to expect from a typical show at the Carlyle Hotel. Zigmont describes Woody Allen performances as close and intimate shows running an hour long (and sometimes even more). Given that the band refrains from referring to pre-determined sets and sheet music, they can always trust Allen to come prepared with a list of songs to play every Monday night – this helps keep performances fresh. Towards the end of the show, Zigmont, Wettenhall (trumpet player) and Cohen (bassist) leave the stage and let Woody and the remaining band members play in a quartet setting. If you are lucky, Eddy Davis sometimes even selects little tunes for Allen to play and sing along to. According to Zigmont, the audience consists of New Yorkers and folks from out of town who want to witness Allen in his element.
All eyes on Woody Allen
Woody Allen is one of the most revered movie directors in Hollywood. Apart from being a director he is also a writer and an actor. Add musician to the mix of careers and Allen is the perfect blend of both film and music. His fame has enabled him and Eddy Davis New Orleans Band to attract fans who are fascinated to see the renowned director play his clarinet. Woody Allen is the main focal point of every performance; while the crowd’s attention is fixated on him, he concentrates on playing his tunes. Most of Allen’s movies also feature songs that he has performed with his band. On numerous occasions critics have praised him for his movies’ music scores.
In an interview with Times Magazine Allen said, “My attitude is: 'Look, I'm playing for fun, for my own enjoyment…,'". Allen takes his music career quite seriously; in 2012 his movie “Midnight in Paris” won the Academy Award for “Best Original Screenplay” however, Allen refused to attend the ceremony because he had a gig to play at the Carlyle Hotel that night. This incident has helped boost the band’s popularity even further.
