Early Years

Legendary music artist Willie Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas in April, 1933. His father was a mechanic and mother a homemaker. Soon after the birth of Willie, his mother abandoned the family and sometime later his father too remarried and left. He and his sister were raised by his grandparents who taught music to earn a living. Hence the children’s interest in music was inevitable.

Willie started playing the guitar when he was only six years of age. It was given to him by his grandfather as a gift. He often used to take the children to the nearby church where Willie’s sister would sing Gospel and he would play the guitar. At seven years old Nelson started to write his own songs and few years after, he joined a music band. By the time Willie was in middle school, he was already playing music around the state. His family used to pick cotton during summer while he contributed by playing music gigs at parties and various other occasions and venues.

Willie’s music sensibilities were groomed when he played as a member of a country band called Bohemian Polka. At school, Willie was known for his athleticism and played sports such as basketball and football. He also performed as a singer and guitarist for a band called The Texans. Willie finished high school in the year 1950. Soon after he joined the prestigious American Air Force but was unable to continue being a part of it owing to a back pain. In the 1950s, Willie attended the Baylor University where he studied farming. However, midway through the course, he decided to quit the degree and focus on music full-time.

The next few months were tough for Willie as he moved to various places to find a job. Eventually he decided to go to Portland. This was where his mother lived. Upon reaching Portland, Willie took a $10 loan from a driver.

Music Career

Then, Willie Nelson moved to Vancouver, Washington where he met country singer and songwriter Leon Payne. The two collaborated and created a song called Lumberjack. The track sold about three thousand copies but did not bring the kind of fame and money that Willie was expecting. He then worked as a disc jockey for some years before moving to the Music City.

Willie started recording demo tapes and sent them to various record labels but to no avail. However his songwriting talents were noticed and he was soon referred to Pamper Music, a well-known music label. The owner of the label, Ray Price was quite impressed with Willie’s music and hence invited him to be a part of a band called Cherokee Cowboys. Willie accepted the offer and joined in as a bassist.

In the year 1973, Willie Nelson released his debut music album Shotgun Willie. The immediate response to the record was not all that encouraging but with time, the album started gaining appreciation. During the 1970s, Willie released albums such as Red Headed Stranger, Stardust and Waylon and Willie. These turned Willie into one of country music’s biggest stars of the time.

The 1980s were the peak of Willie Nelson’s music career. His cover version of Elvis Presley’s Always on My Mind was a massive hit. It featured on his record of the same name and topped several music charts. He also worked on a collaboration with the Latin pop star Julio Iglesias for the single called To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before which again was a milestone in Willie’s career.
