The formation of the band can be traced back to 1981 to the dorms of the University of Georgia. John Bell met Michael Houser for the first time there and they decided to form the band. The two started writing songs together and came up with the popular songs “Chilly Water” and “Driving Song.”

Widespread Panic started off by playing local bars and fraternities before they were discovered by Landslide Record and signed a recording deal.
