White Snake is a phenomenal rock group formed by Deep Purple member, David Coverdale. This band was formed back in 1978 in the UK and has been playing phenomenal music since then as well as releasing many awesome albums. Their music is sensational; some of its albums are much like Deep Purple’s songs while its latter songs have the band’s unique style that is more heavy metal than that of Deep Purple. Thus, for fans of Deep Purple, this is the best band out their for you formed by a Deep Purple member and for fans who would like Deep Purple music but slightly heavier, this band is also for you as it brings that heavy metal twist to Deep Purple’s music. This band has been labeled as one of the Greatest Hard Rock Bands of All Time by VH1 and the present lineup contains many American musicians alongside the founder, David Coversdale.
The first lineup of White Snake was made up of David Coverdale, Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, David Dowle and Neil Murray. The band’s first release was the EP, Snakebite, in 1978. The band had been playing music before then as a support band for David Coverdale during his solo career after leaving Deep Purple. The band’s first EP contained the hit single Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City, a Bobby ‘Blue’ Band track that White Snake had covered. This was an immense hit that the band had to re-issue the EP with more tracks. The band’s first album was released the same year, titled as Trouble. It’s tracks were a fusion of blues, R&B and rock much in the Deep Purple style and was followed by the going on tour to Europe and Hapan.
In 1979, White Snake released their second album, Lovehunter, an album that topped the UK Albums charts and contained the hit single, Long Way From Home. Two years later, White Snake was back with the sensational album, Ready an’ Willing, with the band’s lineup now made up of three members who had also been part of Deep Purple. Thus, this reincarnation of Deep Purple, much better than any tribute band could ever hope to be, was a massive hit in the UK and the US. Their third album was a top ten hit in the UK as well as ranking high in the US charts. It contained the hit single Fool For Your Loving. The band then made a sensational appearance on the popular Reading Festival with the band’s performance broadcast live on BBC Radio One.
By this time, White Snake was opening up for bands like AC/DC and Jethro Tull. Their next album was Live…In The Heart Of The City, an album that ranked at number five in the UK Album Charts. White Snake’s next amazing album was released in 1981 and was titled as Come an’ Get It, an album that ranked a record second on the UK Album Charts, a feat few artists or bands could claim at that time. It contained the hit singles Don't Break My Heart Again and Would I Lie To You. Thus, with two successive albums ranking at fifth and at second, White Snake was a band that was on the tongues of every fan of good music in the UK and even in the US.
White Snake then released the popular album, Saints & Sinners, which had the hit song, Here I Go Again, in it. This album charted in the top ten of the UK Albums Charts with White Snake again going on tour to promote the album. After that, White Snake’s music began to show a change in genre from the softer Blues rock to a more harder hard rock sound. The first album with this music was Slide It In and it was a massive success with fans and critics alike praising the band’s new experimental sound. This marked the band as truly playing for music rather than a band that played for commercial gain. Two of this album’s songs, Love Aint No Stranger and Slow An’ Easy was phenomenal toppers in the US as well as in the band’s native UK.
This successful British and American, with origins in UK and Deep Purple as well as American band members is truly a hall of fame group. It has won many awards and released many albums. Its songs are chart toppers and even after twenty five years, the band is still releasing albums and playing them live. To date, it has released around eleven albums with the latest released in 2011. In short, for a taste of Deep Purple, blues rock and some heavy metal, grab some White Snake tickets and go watch this amazing group play amazing music.
