A Spanish youth orchestra, the West Eastern Divan Orchestra was founded by Edward Said, an American philanthropist and scholar who named this orchestra after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s anthology of poems written from 1814 to 1819. The orchestra consists of a large variety of musicians from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures such as Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Middle East, Iran, Syria, Palestine and Spain. Located in the city of Seville of Spain, the debut event that was held by this orchestral organization was a workshop held in Weimar that is located in Germany. This workshop was held in the same year as its establishment so as to inform the younger generation regarding the orchestra and encourage applicants to apply. After the workshop more than two hundred youngsters applied to become a part of the orchestra, most of whom were Arab students.
The main aim behind the establishment of this orchestral organization was to create a friendly atmosphere where Palestinian and Israeli children could forget about their differences and unite to create spectacular symphonic melodies. The founder, Edward Said, thought this would work as a great remedy to the Israeli-Arab conflict. So far this organization has been doing great as it constitutes of musicians from different religions, beliefs and norms who perform as a cohesive unit. Over the years it has become a forum for the discussion of the Israeli and Palestinian issues and hence has become a political project rather than just being an orchestral organization. Currently operated by Barenboim who took charge after the demise of Edward, and his widow, Mariam Said the orchestra receives donations from the Junta de Andalucía located in Spain and other private organizations. Celebrating its fourteenth anniversary this year, the West Eastern Divan Orchestra has played an integral part in understanding the Mediterranean cultures in a much clearer manner. The orchestra has also proven how easy it is for people to overcome the barriers and bridges put forth by their religion and manmade boundaries.
The organization has been able to perform all over the world in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Uruguay and France. It has toured massively throughout the Palestinian and Israeli territories so as to promote their mission of unity amongst the two communities. The organization has also established a summer music school that is located in the city of Seville and is located at the Junta de Andalucía. The orchestral organization is known to hold summer workshops annually before inaugurating their performance season each year. For their annual regular season performances the orchestra has received several awards and honors such as the Principe de Asturias Concord Award that it received in 2002 along with the Premium Imperiale Award that was given by the Japan Arts Association, in the same year. Then in the year 2006, a documentary based on the orchestra was filmed which won an Emmy Award in the category of Best Documentary. In the following year the orchestra was honored with the Premium Imperiale Grant for Young Artists Award.
The West Eastern Divan Orchestra has performed for notable dignitaries such as its performance in front of the eleventh president of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano in 2012, and also the Pope Benedict XVI at the Castle Gandolfo in the same year. if you are interested in becoming a part of an upcoming spectacle that will feature this orchestra then all that needs to be done is for you to get your hands on West Eastern Divan Orchestra tickets immediately.
