Watain are an acclaimed Swedish metal music group from Uppsala. The band was created in 1998. They take their name from a recording that was done by Von, which was an American metal group. In 1998, the band released their debut demo called Go (expletive) Your Jewish God. The following year they released their live recording titled as Black Metal Sacrifice. Their EP known as The Essence of Black Purity came out in October 1999 on the popular Grim Rune Productions. The band rendered this release to be their first official release. They were then seen performing in a show in collaboration with Dark Funeral and Malign that was a show put up by Grim Rune Productions and the band.
In 2000, the debut album of Watain, Rabid Death’s Curse came out via End All Life Productions as well as Drakkar Productions. This album was followed by an EP that featured Diabolicum. Later a split EP in collaboration with Malign was planned by the band; however the recording of the second full studio album Casus Luciferi was also planned thus the project was put on hold. In early 2002, the group toured Europe extensively. In 2003, they began working on their second album after which they began touring again with numerous other musicians and bands. They effectively toured a total of 18 countries. While performing in 2005 in Russia, Dissection band member, Set Teitan was seen supporting the group by performing as their live bassist. Teitan later become a full time member of the band.
The band ended up in a controversy in 2006 when they performed live in Germany in which they carried on with a live Hitler salute and also wore apparel that suggested them to be in support of the Nazis. When the media questioned them about this, the band members simply added that they had done it for the sake of pure live entertaining fun and had not meant for anyone to misunderstand them.
On the 21st of February in 2007, Watain’s third full length studio recorded album came out in Europe. After the release of the album they toured alongside Legion of the Damned, Kreator and Celtic Frost. They performed in their debut headlining tour in North America in 2008 along with Eclipse Eternal, Book of Black Earth, Kronosfear and Withered. Their North American tour was a mega successful tour and they garnered an immense amount of fan following from their performances there.
The band successfully released a brilliant single "Reaping Death" in 2010 which came out in two different formats. One was a picture disc vinyl that comprised of the cover song by Death SS called "Chains of Death" and the other was a digi-sleeve CD that included the cover song of Bathory’s called "The Return of Darkness and Evil". On the 7th of June in 2010, their album Lawless Darkness was released. The band toured for six years and performed in various cities across Europe and North America. On the 19th of August, 2013, their fifth album, The Wild Hunt was released in Europe and on the 20th of August, 2013 it came out in the United States of America. With the release of this album the band is going to now embark on a world tour.
