This was followed by his success in an amateur contest that was sponsored by a Guadalajara television station. With this he became a regular performer, and started delivering acts at gatherings and local clubs. At the same time, his father lost the ranch and the family shifted to the city of Tijuana. Fernandez had left school when he was in the fifth grade and took up the odd jobs of dishwasher, waiter and janitor in the city. However, he did not let go his musical aspirations.

Fernandez eventually took up music full time in 1960. He performed as a busker in Guadalajara, and also appeared off and on, in the television show La Calandria musical. Ambition took him to Mexico City and he started singing at El Amanacer Tapatio, a restaurant which was thronged by the elites. He continuously endeavored to audition for the recording companies but his efforts were not acknowledged.

The artist's breakthrough came in 1966 when the most popular folk singer of Mexico Javier Solis passed away. The record companies started looking for someone to substitute him and called on Fernandez. He was offered a recording contract by CBS Mexico which led him to release his first recording "Perdoname" in 1966. The company is now known as Sony Discos, and Fernandez continues to record for it. To date, Vicente Fernandez has recorded more than 50 albums. "Volver, volver" was his greatest hit that seized the music lovers by storm in 1976. "15 Grandes con el numero uno" was his first million-selling album that reached the market shelves in 1983. He conducted his first international tour outside Mexico and the US by traveling Colombia and Bolivia in 1987.

Vicente Fernandez won the Billboard and Univision's Latin Music Award for Mexican Regional Male Artist of the Year for his album "Vicente Fernandez y las clasicas de Jose Alfredo Jimenez" released in 1990. The Latin Recording Academy recognized him as Person of the Year in 2002. The Hollywood walk of fame has dedicated a star to Fernandez.
