The love of poetry & Hip-hop
Vanilla Ice was born in Dallas, Texas in 1967 and was always interested in hip-hop music as he loved poetry. It was his love for poetry that was to go on and play a big part in the kind of music he would go on to play over the course of his subsequent career. Apart from poetry the artist also used to do breakdancing which gave him the nickname ‘Vanilla’ because of him being the only member of his group who wasn’t African American. Keeping his passion of poetry alive, the artist started to rap during parties and soon his friends gave him the ‘MC Vanilla’ title because of his rhyming skills. He wrote his first hit single, Ice Ice Baby when he was just sixteen. The lyrics were inspired by a weekend he spent with his good friend, D-Shay.
Doing what he was born to do
Though Vanilla Ice was interested in hip-hop and breakdancing, he started to pursue a career in motocross and won three successive championships at the Grand National Championship in Dallas. However his run was cut short after he broke his ankle and he began to focus his energies on perfecting his dance routines. Vanilla Ice then visited City Lights one evening where a friend dared him to perform. The crowd loved his performance so, John Bush, the club’s manager, let Ice perform regularly. He was joined by D-Shay, Zero and Earthquake and opened for names like, N.W.A, Mc Hammer, The D.O.C, Paula Abdul, 2 Live Crew and Public Enemy among others.
Vanilla Ice later signed an agreement with City Lights’s owner, Tommy Quon who saw potential in the artist. Quon financed his recording of songs and so he released his debut album, ‘Hooked’ which produced the single, Play That Funky Music which went platinum in the United States and topped the Hot Soul Singles chart. The single also made it to the list of Billboard’s, ‘Greatest Songs of all Time.’
After releasing, ‘Hooked,’ Vanilla Ice was signed by SBK Records in 1990 who remixed and re-recorded his previous album and changed the title to, ‘To the Extreme.’ The record was a massive hit which went six and seven times platinum in Canada and the United States respectively. It also reached the first spot on the Billboard 200. It featured three singles including, Ice Ice Baby which went platinum in the US, NZ and the UK. It also became the first single to top the Billboard chart.
Struggles, Success and Tour
Since Vanilla Ice came out with, ‘To The Extreme’ in 1990, he has released five studio albums more. Apart from pursuing his career as a rapper, the artist also tried his luck in acting and starred in films like, Cool as Ice, The New Guy, The Helix…Loaded and That’s My Boy. He has also won an American Music Award, the People Choice Award and The Factual Entertainment Award.
