Imagine an artist who at the age of fifteen drops out his education just in pursuit of a career in music, gets to be associated with Bert Berns and later Warner Bros Records in the early years of his career, has won numerous awards over the years, fans droll over his music style and the way he performs, best known for his brilliant improvisation in blending multiple genres…who else can this be but his highness, Van Morrison.  Starting his solo career in the late 60’s, Van Morrison is one the most critically acclaimed ground-breaking artists. Creating a perfect blend of jazz, R& B, folk and blues, the Irish singer and song writer structures his work on soul music. Popular among his fans as “Van the Man”, Morrison took a start in his early teens with performing several musical instruments with the known bands back in the days but what rose him to prominence was the chance to sing the classic, “Gloria” with the band “Them”. From then onwards Van started an exciting ride on the path of a solo career, a ride that many would kill for.

Speaking of Morrison’s achievements and contribution to music you just cannot miss out on what Lester Bangs, a well known music journalist from the 60’s wrote in his praise. In Lester ‘s words Morrison is “interested, obsessed with how much musical or verbal information he can compress into a small space, and, almost, conversely, how far he can spread one note, word, sound, or picture. To capture one moment, be it a caress or a twitch. He repeats certain phrases to extremes that from anybody else would seem ridiculous, because he's waiting for a vision to unfold; trying as unobtrusively as possible to nudge it along...It's the great search, fueled by the belief that through these musical and mental processes illumination is attainable or may at least be glimpsed."

Looking at the golden words by Lester it is quite evident that Morrison took such a beyond belief start into a career in music that even the critics could not cease to be amazed. Following the fame that he got in his early years, Morrison has spent decades making the music that reached the highest peak of popularity and won him immense recognition.

Having recorded more than 30 albums in his career, the artist’s renewed eminence came in the 90’s when he recorded some of the best selling albums of his career; the albums that were not just selling but won him awards as well. In contrast to most of his work in the eighties, the nineties saw him being more eclectic. It was in 1990 when Van Morrison came out with his album “Enlightenment”, which is critically acclaimed as one of his best albums so far especially "Enlightenment" the title song, is considered to be on one of the top favorite songs from his great and long career. The 1991’s “Hymns of Silence” is also considered a masterpiece and one of his best songs. After these songs made such high tides in his career, Morrison became a craze for the music fans of the new generation.

Morrison is twice the winner of “The Best Collaboration with Vocals”, first in 1996 for “Have I told you lately” with “Chieftains” and again in 1998 for his renowned collaboration with John Lee Hooker for the song “Don’t Look Back”. The legendary singer has also won a number of Hall of Fame Awards and surprisingly enough, three of them were in the year 1999 for “Astral Week”, “Moondance” and “Gloria” and the fourth in 2007 for “Brown Eyed Girl” that also appeared on the Billboard and Cashbox charts. Besides the aforementioned, Morrison has also won two civil awards in 1996 and has always appeared in the Lists of the Greatest like the Time magazine’s All-Time 100 Albums, WXPN’S 885 All Time Greatest Artist, in the 100 Greatest Artists of Rock and Roll by VH1 and various others. If one goes on writing about his awards and recognitions an article can easily turn into a dissertation. But one cannot help but mention that for his outstanding contribution to music, Morrison was presented the IMB ICON Award by one of the greatest actor’s, the legendary Al Pacino.
