Vampire Weekend was formed in 2006 when its band members met in Columbia University. This indie rock band initially played gigs at university functions as well as parties and soon became popular because of their unique vocals and lyrics. Deciding not to let their talent go waste, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Rostam Batmanglij and Chris Tomson self produced their first album. The album, which was mostly recorded in dorm rooms and family barns created a lot of buzz among the music lovers and earned the band recognition. In 2007 Vampire Weekend signed with the label XL Records and started working on their first major album. When “Vampire Weekend” released in 2008, it became the fifth best album of that year, earning the band a huge fan following. Influenced by African popular and western classical music, Vampire Weekend created an album that hit its mark with the people. The band describes its style as Upper West Side Soweto and has succeeded in creating music that is joyful and preppy. Since their debut, Vampire Weekend has taken over the rock scene and their rhythmic beats along with catchy lyrics have made them one of the most popular rock bands of this generation.
The bands first studio album, “Vampire Weekend” focuses mostly on the pop genre. The album was mainly appreciated because it included simple yet refreshing tracks. Vampire Weekend did not try to impress the fans by fancy music playing or experimenting much with different instruments. The song, “Oxford Comma” is a clean mixture of keyboard and drums and the band has not tried to fill the empty space by including other instruments. The simple music is what makes this track so captivating. "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” became the most popular song of the album and came in the top fifty songs of that year. The song showcased a unique mixture of pop and African rhythm which created a rich melody.
Vampire Weekend released their second album, “Contra” in 2010. This time the band experimented with different instruments and expanded their sound. Different styles have been incorporated in the songs to create a more edgy music. Each band member has tried to add to their skills and produced something really fresh. The Afro-pop music by the band creates a lot of variation in the rhythm and textures. Vampire Weekend has shown their adventurous side in this album as the experimentation with the beats has been able to produce some breathtaking music. “Contra” blends different instruments beautifully and the fans are treated to some new music in the form of piano, violins, drums, marimbas and electric guitar. Fans have found it to be a mature album which includes substantial material.
Since their debut, Vampire Weekend has been nominated many times in various categories.
Both their albums not only became instant hits but also earned them rave reviews from the critics. Many critics have appreciated Vampire Weekend for their songwriting skills and claim that the lyrics have depth to them. While most rock bands write songs about hip-hop things, Vampire Weekend has penned words about classical architecture, education and the modern world.
The infectious music produced by Vampire Weekend has increased their fan following. It has also been labeled as a cultured man’s band since their songs are above the typical rock n` roll music. The Caribbean grooves, Mexican beats and the African tribal rhythm that is so evident in their music has been appreciated by many.
Vampire Weekend has always witnessed sold out concerts. The band members, who are often referred to as “smart and privileged” boys, show the same composure in their live performances. These clean-cut rock musicians create such an atmosphere that the crowd can’t help but sing along with them. The beat of the hand drums, blaring of the electric guitar and the reggae rhythms makes the crowd go crazy.
