The origin of the band Uriah Heep dates back to the year 1967 when guitarist Mick Box formed a band called Hogwash in Brentwood and began playing in local pubs and clubs. When the lead vocalist left, drummer Roger Penlington’s cousin David Garrick was the replacement. Garrick and Box’s songwriting partnership was a solid one. They eventually decided to quit their day jobs and pursue music professionally. They formed a new band Spice and it was at this point in time that Garrick changed his surname to Byron. Later on they were joined by drummer Alex Napier and bassist Paul Newton. From the beginning, this band began to play original material and avoided doing covers.
The band’s first album released as Uriah Heep in the US was …Very ‘Eavy… Very ‘Umble through Vertigo Records (UK), in the year 1970. In America it came out in August of the same year via Mercury Records.
In this record, Uriah Heep tried and played about with a variety of music genres. It was a combination of progressive rock and heavy metal rather than hard rock which was predominantly evident in their later albums. The initial response to the album by the critics was not too positive. But over the years the band received recognition from the harshest of critics and the album went on to be acknowledged as one of the classics of heavy metal.
Demons and Wizards
The Uriah Heep lineup went through several changes. However, many are of the opinion that it was with the inclusion of Gray Thain from New Zealand that Uriah Heep discovered its signature sound. He became a permanent member of the group in February of 1972. While talking about Gray, Mick Box said that he had a unique style and one that was loved by every bassist he knew.
This newfound chemistry led to the making of the album Demons and Wizards. The record hit the Top 25 in both the UK and the US. The collection was highly praised by fans and critics alike. It went on to sell three million copies around the world. The singles Easy Livin’ and The Wizard were major hits in the UK and the US. The former was a mega hit in Germany as well as the Netherlands. In the year 1996, the album was re-mastered and re-issued with three additional tracks by the label Castle Communications and in 2017, a two-disc deluxe edition was released by Sanctuary Records.
From the year 1986 until 2007 the lineup of Uriah Heep remained unchanged, with guitarist Mick Box, bassist Trevor Bolder, drummer Lee Kerslake, keyboardist Phil Lanzon and singer Bernie Shaw. December 1987 marked them as one of the first ever Western music bands to play in the Soviet Union under the glasnost policy of Mikhail Gorbachev.
In May of 1989, the band treated the fans to the album Raging Silence, produced by Richard Dodd. It was followed by a return to the Soviet Union and concerts in countries including Poland, Brazil and the UK. In January, 2014, Uriah Heep made their way into the studios to record their 24th studio record titled Outsider. It hit the store shelves in June of the same year. The album featured new bassist Davey Rimmer who had performed as a substitute for Trevor Bolder the year before.
Uriah Heep hit the road in 2015 with the Down Unda Tour which had them perform in cities across Australia and New Zealand. They then announced their greatest hits album titled Totally Driven which was a collection of re-recordings of the classic Heep songs that were made in 2001.
Uriah Heep’s 25th studio album Living the Dream released in September, 2018. It has met an overwhelming response from both fans and critics. They will be seen promoting material form this album on Judas Priest’s Firepower tour for which they’ve been roped in as the support act. So wait no more to get Uriah Heep tickets and catch them live.
